The Immense Privilege of Discipling Our Children

Over the last six months at Trinity, one of the real highlights for me–and I imagine it also was for many of you–was the baptism of Owen Hoving. So much was happening in those few minutes: a sign for this beautiful little boy (and for us) of God’s wonderfully gracious salvation promises; vows by parents to entrust Owen to his Lord’s care and prayers that Owen would some day come personally to know Him; and also commitments made between us and the Hovings that Owen would be a part of our congregation and that we would partner with them in loving Owen and nurturing him in the gospel.

This is an awesome privilege we have been given: to participate in the discipling, the spiritual formation of our church’s children. In every interaction we have with them, we are helping to shape royal bearers of the divine image, prized by God.

Over this summer a group of us, led by Rhoda Mattson, have met to brainstorm and consider together how we as a church might even more effectively be involved in discipling our kids. One recurring theme was that our children need adults who are committed to praying for and developing real relationships with them. The most effective “classrooms” for our children are the lives of others who have been shaped by the gospel.

Would you consider helping to mentor our kids? In two weeks’ time (August 1st, during the Sunday School hour), we’ll be having an introductory children’s ministry training meeting, led by Rhoda. This will not only be for those who are interested in teaching on Sunday mornings, but also for anyone who is willing to consider being part of the project of discipling kids like Owen, or Ella, or Joel, or Cary, or Peter, or Olivia, or Emma, or the many other children in our church. You are making no commitments by coming, and childcare will be provided, so please join us!
