Community is something that pretty much everyone agrees is a good idea. There are very few people who say, “Community is a bad idea; let’s all be alone.” And yet, there’s a reason that community is hard to find, and that’s because people are hard. Whenever we commit ourselves to someone else, whenever we allow someone to get close to us, we also are allowing them to exhaust us, or frustrate us, or hurt us. People are hard.
The Christian hope is that what human failure and brokenness has torn apart, Jesus is weaving back together. As our risen king changes us and heals us, he is making true, beautiful community more and more of a reality again. It will not be perfect until we all are made perfect when Jesus returns. But it is real. Jesus is bringing us back together.
And our calling, as the community of Jesus, as the church, is to live this out. To let the power of Jesus remake us into the community we were meant to be—to place ourselves under the authority and power of Jesus so that we can be a community who shows something real to the world.
